Slappy Birthday, Adam! You Rock!
RATED PG for irreverent sense of humor. Today is Adam’s 39th Earthday Birthday. Adam has sent me presents every year on his birthday since his transition to the Other Side eleven years ago. On March 30, 2014, I was standing at the kitchen sink when Adam said, “Go outside and look in the sky.”
I did as instructed and there, in the sky was a rainbow on an otherwise sunny day. “Look again.” Above the rainbow was a cloud with Adam’s image. You have to look closely, but in ¾ profile you can make out Adam’s hair, his nose, mouth, chin, right eye and one eyebrow.
I stayed up late last night to snap a screenshot of Adam’s image on my phone at the stroke of midnight. “I can’t wait to see what you have in mind this year,” I said, as I made my way to bed. Several memories from Adam’s previous birthdays popped up on Facebook this morning. I chose one and started a Facebook post. It kept disappearing. It was clear Adam had something else in mind, so I gave up the ghost (pun intended), went outside and started searching for my presents. Adam always sends me a yellow rose, even when there were no roses the previous day. Not to disappoint, there it was – a lovely yellow rose in full bloom alongside a plethora of rosebuds, the promise of many yellow roses to come.
My mom passed away last summer and I’ve been busy getting her house and a duplex ready for sale. I had to call someone to come out and measure for a door. “Thank you for calling Home Depot, my name is Miracle. How can I help you?” Of course, your name is Miracle, it’s Adam’s birthday!
I met the realtor at the duplex to photograph the interior of the vacant side. As I handed her my business card, I shared that my professional name, Cindyana Jones, comes from a dream about Harrison Ford. That conversation led to the story of my seeing Harrison Ford’s kitchen, the same kitchen in my dream, on a David Blaine special featuring Will and Jada Pinkett Smith.
“So, what does that have to do with the price of eggs?” Wait for it…..
As I followed the realtor from the duplex to my mom’s house, I received a text from my husband, Greg: “I was somewhat nervous the day I got up early to talk to Adam about marrying his Mother. After my declaration of love for you, Adam said he had never seen you happier. Of course, this made me very happy. I got to marry the Love of My life along with Adam’s blessing. I’s been with me all this time. Just like you. Thanks Adam. I love Cin with everything that’s good and positive and we all love you. Every Day. GA”
The “A” in GA stands for Adams. Greg Adams. What are the odds I’d marry a man who would give me back the same name I’d given my precious first born son three years before I had to give my son back to God?
I left my mom’s house and headed to Safeway for groceries. As I walked into the produce section, a handsome young African-American man crossed my path with the biggest grin on his face. Wondering what he was looking at, I followed his gaze to the organic produce isle. There was nothing there but produce. “I want some of what he’s having,” I thought as I headed for the mushrooms. Moments later he showed up next to me, the grin on his face bigger than ever and I smiled at him. “I don’t condone hitting anyone for any reason, that’s assault; but I’m listening to the funniest discussion about Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars. It’s hilarious,” he said and showed me on his phone. I told him I’d listen to it when I got home.
THERE IT IS! Will and Jada Pinkett Smith at Safeway in the produce section.
But wait, there’s more!
As I was driving home from the store, the song, “Marry Me” by Train came on in the car, followed by Pachelbel’s Canon, a popular wedding song. A nice follow-up to Greg’s text. As I came to a stoplight, I noticed the car ahead of me. It was a white neighborhood safety patrol car with the number 81 on the bumper. Numbers speak to me and this one said, “Eight plus one is nine, the number of completion.” I looked at the clock and it was 1:26, the day Adam donated organs that were once inside of me, saving the saves of two and greatly improving the lives of three others.
When I got home, I remembered to call a locksmith to re-key the doors at the duplex. The woman misunderstood my name and called me Ruth. I don’t know how she got Ruth from Cindy, but Adam’s accident occurred on January 23rd, my Aunt Ruth’s birthday.
As promised at the grocery store, I listened to the interview about Will Smith slapping Chris Rock. Sauteing mushrooms and asparagus tips for spaghetti, I laughed as Jenkins and Jonez debriefed the details.
“Dude slaps the soul right outta a man and wins an Oscar for Best Actor 20 minutes later. Somebody on Twitter called it the “Pursuit of Slappiness.”
I opened the cupboard for the jar of spaghetti sauce Greg recently purchased and stopped in my tracks as Paul Newman sat there grinning back at me from the label of his own brand of spaghetti sauce, Sockarooni!
Adam was born 03/30/83. There is a star named after him in the constellation, Cepheus, “The King.” Adam’s star number is 033 083. When I reached for a bottle of wine at random, I pulled out “Royal Tee” by Jesse’s Grove, an ancient old vine zin. The odds were only one out of nine, but I loved that it referenced royalty. Adam, you are a clever devil!
After dinner, Greg and I sat back on the sofa with a glass of wine and turned on the TV. About 15 minutes into the program, Greg accidentally hit the remote with his hand and our show evaporated just like the Facebook post I’d started this morning. No matter what I tried, I couldn’t get it back.
“Well, this is frustrating,” I said, “This kind of thing usually happens for a reason. It’s too late to use your key word to talk to Adam.”
“No, it’s not,” said Greg, who channels Adam under hypnosis.
We use a key word and Greg goes under immediately. It zaps his energy if he’s not well rested and he was not. I promised not to keep him under for more than twenty minutes.
In a conversation with Adam via Greg, we laughed about his birthday shenanigans. I asked if he had a birthday message for all of you. “Thank you for thinking of me today. I feel your loving energy and I appreciate you all so much. It’s so fun spending time with all of you.”
When I asked Greg what it felt like to channel Adam, he said, “It was like being surrounded by an Adam cloud. His energy filled this whole corner of the room. It was especially strong around you. You were wrapped in a cloud of love. He loves you so much.”
“What a perfect day,” I thought and headed for the bedroom. There was something on the floor in the doorway. It was a red paper lotus Greg had given me several years ago that had been hanging on our bedroom door ever since. “I wonder what caused it to fall off today of all days,” I said as I reached down to pick it up and put it back on the door. I used my thumb to stick it firmly back in place. As I removed my thumb, the message beneath it took my breath away. In tiny little letters right in the center of the lotus were the words, “I Love You.”
Happy Slappy Birthday, Adam! Thank you for such a fun-filled day! You Rock!
