Playing with Mother Nature: A Bird Comedian & Spinning Pinwheels
I’ve had the most extraordinary experiences playing with birds.
The first time it happened, I spied a
Like a clown on a tricycle, he looked hilariously out of place.
“What are you, a comedian?” I asked.
I swear on everything I hold dear, that bird did a death drop backward hanging upside down from the hummingbird feeder.
He clung onto the little peg as the bird feeder slowly spun in a circle.
I could not believe my eyes and I couldn’t stop laughing.
He concluded his little clown show by posing atop the wrought iron shepherd’s hook above the bird feeder, where he sat looking directly at me.
As I sat staring back at him in open-mouthed astonishment, he flew straight at me, buzzing the top of my head as he zoomed past the bird feeder intended for the sparrows.
He, or another bird just like him, returned to the hummingbird feeder a few days later.
There he sat on the tiny perch looking directly at me.
This time, I said, “What are you, a hummingbird?
He hopped off the
Holy Guacamole! That sparrow imitated a hummingbird!
I was sitting in the same spot with my husband, Greg, and my stepson, Stephen, when that bird or one just like him, landed atop the shepherd’s hook above the hummingbird feeder.
As I was sharing the story of the sparrow imitating a hummingbird, the bird did exactly as I said, literally illustrating my story in real time!
I began to experiment with the idea that as long as I held space for the possibility of something to happen, no matter how unlikely, it could happen.
My neighbors probably think I’m a little weird.
Because we live on a lake, our backyard fences can’t be over four feet tall.
Then there’s the matter of neighbors who live directly across the lake.
With 20/20 vision, they can see everything I do.
With binoculars, I don’t even want to think about it. 😆🎵 🎶💃✌️👽👙🍾
I focused my attention on the little metal pinwheels in my back yard.
I pointed to one of them and asked it to spin. It stood still. I asked again, with more intention and thought to add the word, “please.”
It slowly began to spin.
“Faster, faster,” I said until it was spinning so fast it was nothing but a shiny orb reflecting the afternoon sun.
When I pointed to the pinwheel next to it, which had been standing stock still, she chimed right in, as did the pinwheel next to her.
I concluded that when it comes to making requests of Mother Nature, if I ask with the faith of a child and expect it to happen, it does.
To my fellow fairy-goddess-foo-foo friends out there, try it yourself and let the rest of us know what happened.
